Digital etiquette is now an essential life skill. It teaches young people that courtesy, judgment, privacy, accountability, and personal safety must extend beyond the classroom and into every online environment.
Online etiquette is more than being polite. It is learning to communicate responsibly, protect one’s privacy, and make thoughtful decisions in a permanent digital world.
How to keep students safer on the internet
Digital safety begins with simple, consistent habits:
- Protect personal information.
- Use strong, unique passwords.
- Think carefully before posting.
- Never engage privately with strangers.
- Report bullying, threats, scams, or uncomfortable interactions with a trusted adult.
Parents and caregivers can reinforce these habits by keeping devices in shared spaces, using appropriate parental controls, discussing cyberbullying and online predators, and enabling automatic security updates.
